It is a day when we celebrate the historic political, economic and social achievements of women, and remember those still fighting for freedom in repressive societies. Born as a socialist, political movement, honoring women's important role in promoting peace and social justice, the significance of the day has gradually broadened. In some countries, it has become an occasion for men and children to express their love for the women in their lives with small gifts and flowers. It is also a day when women celebrate their solidarity with one another. I celebrate that solidarity. It goes far beyond political activism. Quite simply, women's friendships are enriching, supportive, and essential to our well being. We cannot choose the circumstances into which we are born. But we CAN choose our friends.
